Happy vegan month! - Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sagely Monastery and vegan canteen

November 1st marked the beginning of world vegan month! So today I took my cues from the masters of clean eating themselves, by paying a visit to Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sagely Monastery, Kuala Lumpur. Such an amazing place right in the heart of KL, and every day the canteen serves up a delicious vegan feast. Definitely one of the world’s most best kept secrets, as there is so many dishes to choose from as well as fresh fruit and vegan baked goods fresh out of the oven. The food is cooked by volunteers and the proceeds go to the monastery. The idea here is to educate that vegetarian food can be as tasty, healthier, and more sustainable as a majority of their produce comes from their own garden!

Apart from food, the monastery has a lot more to offer. Including a library to explore, the calm spaces to sit, potted bonsai, giant gilded statues create an appropriately contemplative mood. The shrine is dedicated to Guan Yin, the Buddhist goddess of compassion, represented by the central statue in the main shrine and clearly demonstrated by the folk here.

All in all, this temple is the antipodal of what this part of town represents; peace versus the hectic bustling lifestyle, calm verses the honks of cars and buses, healthy vegetarian food versus MSG laden processed food. It certainly lived up to its name, Stepping on the Other Shore
